The province is sending nurses back to school at Dalhousie University to learn how to prescribe medication. Thirteen nurses finished the course in December, with another group starting in January. Another group will attend in the fall. The goal is to provide seniors who require continuing care in their own homes or long-term care homes faster access to healthcare while reducing trips to the emergency department. The continuing care nurses will be able to prescribe medication for common ailments like urinary tract infections or dermatitis. The province is paying for their tuition at a cost of $400,000. One of the recent graduates of the program works at Shoreham Village in Chester.
