Power rate increase

Electricity rates are going up in Nova Scotia. The 2.4 per cent rate hike has been approved by the regulator for next year. Because of delays at Muskrat Falls, Nova Scotia Power had to buy fuel at higher than usual rates to provide electricity. The feds offered the utility a loan guarantee of $500 million to reduce the cost of borrowing money to pay for fuel. The company says without the bailout, rate hikes could have been as high as 19 per cent.

Speaking of power, residents and businesses in the Lunenburg and Mahone Bay area will be without lights overnight Saturday. The planned power outage will take place from 11 pm Saturday to 7 am Sunday morning. Nova Scotia Power says the outage allows crews to make improvements to the local substation.
