The union representing thousands of provincial government workers is pushing back on the Nova Scotia government's decision to end flexible remote work for provincial employees. The 2,500 to 3,000 employees must be back in the office by April 20th. The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union says Premier Tim Houston has failed to look at “alternate workplaces as a cost-savings measure. Premier Houston has decided to pass the buck onto these workers, while forcing more commuters onto our crowded roads.” The union says about half of its employees live in the Halifax metro area. The union accuses the provincial government of having no statistical evidence that the back-to-the-office order will make for a more “effective or efficient workplace.” Some provincial employees have had longstanding flexible work arrangements since 2020.
